How Do We Take Care of Our Mental Health at Work?

Tiffany Momoko Kindred for Healthline

Sometimes the idea of prioritizing our mental health while also excelling at our jobs seems incompatible. There are many demands, deadlines, and expectations at work that may impact and interfere with employees’ mental wellbeing. Historically, asking for a mental health day has been strongly frowned upon but in some industries, as times have changed, so has the workforce in becoming more understanding of the importance of positive mental health at work. AGP Therapist Tiffany Momoko Kindred, LMSW, recently contributed to a Healthline article that answers the question: How do we take care of our mental health at work? A couple of suggestions Tiffany provides include:

For hiring managers and employers:

  • Receiving training and education on the topic of mental health.

  • Offering employees benefits such as vouchers to mental wellness facilities like a yoga studio.

  • Creating physical space in the office for down-time, such as a meditation room.

  • Normalizing the importance of mental health in the workplace culture by talking about it!

For employees:

  • Committing to remaining unplugged during your days off.

  • Taking a walk or time for yourself, doing deep breathing, or meditating when you feel overwhelmed or overworked.
