A note from Nita:
East meets West. It is a phrase we hear often but how does it translate into practice? The pull lies in the strength of the familiar; the push is an urge to create space and jump into the unfamiliar. As an individual who was raised between two cultures, I offer a warm and safe space to discuss cultural competency as it relates to your life. Retaining your cultural values and traditions while simultaneously assimilating to the societal norms of your geographic upbringing can lead to many questions about ourselves in the past, present and future.
I believe strongly in the client’s ability to grow if nurtured in an encouraging and accepting environment. It is very important in the first session to really validate what a client is feeling. For many minorities, there is a stigma toward psychotherapy; it’s not something that's spoken about with their friends and family. I specialize in helping both individuals and couples of all backgrounds, but particularly can help South Asian individuals as I offer sessions in Hindi.
Using a strengths based perspective, I help individuals with anxiety and depression as well as counsel couples faced with relationship challenges. Having worked with children and families with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), I was granted the unique opportunity to consult with parents of the children challenged with ADD. Through this lens I began to structurally understand the layers of the parent-child relationship. By simply listening to parents, I gained the skill to practice more purposefulness in my life as a way of paying attention.
I can help navigate the journey of parenthood from infancy through the adolescent years. The battles parents face through each stage of their child’s upbringing are fierce and I offer role play therapy to bring new perspectives and language to help ease the transitions to new phases of a child’s life. I offer solutions on how to be a more present parent which in turn helps your child prepare for life experiences in a warm and nurturing environment.
My approach:
My approach is rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy modality. Guided into self-analysis, together we will dive into the space between stimulus and response and uncover our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. I offer an attitude of unconditional positive regard which genuinely believes in the client’s ability to grow if nurtured in an encouraging and accepting environment. It’s a framework for valuing and respecting the person’s “right to determination.”
I look forward to helping you.
